Leati Joseph Anoaʻi was born on May 25, 1985, in Pensacola, Florida to Sika Anoa’i and Patricia A. Anoa’i. Both his father and his brother were professional wrestlers.
As a member of the Anoaʻi wrestling family, The Tonga Kid, Rikishi, Umaga, and Yokozuna, are his cousins. His non-biological first cousins once removed include Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Football career-
- Reigns was an excellent football player in senior school and was named Defensive Player of the Year by the Pensacola News Journal.
- In college, he was a member of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football team.
- Unable to get drafted in the 2007 NFL selection, Reigns was later signed by the Minnesota Vikings in May 2007.
- However, due to the presence of leukemia cells, he was released later that month.
- Anoaʻi was again signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars in August 2007 but was once again released even before the NFL season started.
- In 2008, he was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and played for one season.
- The Eskimos released him on November 10 and Reigns retired from professional football.
Wrestling career-
- Anoaʻi became a part of WWE in 2010 where he was assigned to their developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW).
- He made his televised debut on August 19, 2010, using the ring name Roman Leakee, where he lost.
- After WWE rebranded FCW to NXT, Anoaʻi acquired the new ring name Roman Reigns and a villainous character and made his debut by defeating CJ Parker.
- Reigns, alongside Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, declared themselves as a popular wrestling stable named The Shield.
